As part of the third competition screening on Friday, August 22nd, starting at 6 p.m. at Theatre 21, six short films will be shown, including two Croatian premieres!
The animated “Balconada” by Iva Tokmakchieva offers a short story about a downpour in the middle of a hot summer day that not only awakens neighbors from their lethargy, but also finds a way to reconnect them with each other and with the present moment.
The live-action “68 Seconds” by Itana Vukosavljević tells the story of a young, emotionally incapable trumpet player who, on New Year’s Eve, is hastily preparing for an unexpected performance.
The experimental “Voices of the Mountains” by a group of authors known as the DRF Community is the first Croatian premiere in the third block of competition screenings, highlighting how human life is a balance between the familiar and the new.
The animated “Cell Buddies”, also by a group of authors, tells the story of the main characters — Sam, a grumpy raccoon stuck sharing a cell with Bob, a sweet but gloomy manatee.
The main protagonist of the documentary “Coffee with Jovanka” by Izidor Bistrović lives alone in the forest somewhere in Serbia. She is unafraid: if someone kills her, so be it — she doesn’t care, but nor will anyone else care.
Also having its Croatian premiere is the layered experimental “Layers: Film” by Vitorio Scaevola, made from archival footage exploring eight different layers of abstract stratification. By combining macro and micro perspectives, the film creates an impressive audiovisual experience that examines the geometric foundations and archetypal patterns underlying structure and form.
