At last year’s Star Film Fest, the movie Sisters won the audience award. Here is a short description of our interview with the director Lea Vidaković.

Lea says her job is fortunately her hobby. He would describe herself with the movie Melancholia by Lars von Trier. When it comes to female role models, she looks up to Sofia Coppola, but also Ayako Tabata and Rose Bond who do animated movies and installations. She thinks that there are not enough women in the movie industry, but is glad to see a new wave of female authors in Croatia and considers it a very positive trend.

When it comes to movie categories, she prefers feature films, especially dramas, and short animated films. Lea found the inspiration for her movie Sisters in Belgium, where she was inspired by the Flemish painting style. These are the paintings she still enjoys and have inspired her to make a movie where those paintings would come alive and create a subtle atmosphere.

Lea is very happy to have won the audience award at Star Film Fest because she knows that slow and subtle movies with no real action are hard to watch on a big screen. To have the audience score and pick that kind of movie, that is a big deal for her. Lea is sorry that she was absent for the award ceremony, but hopes to be a part of our festival in the future. She is currently enrolled in her PhD studies in Singapore, studying fragmented narratives in animated installations. Her theoretical research also has a practical part, which will be a multichannel space animation in doll animation technique.
