At the last year’s Star Film Fest the award for the best documentary film went to Darovan Tušek, for his film “Ljubi bližnjega svoga” (“Love Thy Neighbour”). We present you a short overview of the interview we had we the film’s director.

Darovan would say for himself that he is a relaxed person, sometimes satirical and mostly low-fi. He would describe himself with a movie “This is Spinal Tap” from 1984. Darovan believes the film industry needs more women and admires the work of Hana Jusić and Sonja Tarokić. His big role model in the industry is Ricky Gervais, from his band Seona Dancing to the Office and so on. However, he does not consider himself to be a part of the industry, but considers film as his safe harbour from his professional everyday life (he’s an architect). He resents Croatian cinematography for being too hungry for “popular” films and thinks that the people in our industry are not very humorous. His favourite contemporary foreign and Croatian films are “Force Majeure” by Ruben Östlund and “Obrana i zaštita” by Bobo Jelčić (“Defense and protection”). Genre-wise, he likes realistic dramas such as Mike Leigh’s the most. He would very much like to visit Star Film Fest and experience all of its magic. Darovan wants to create films in Croatia and believers he can succeed, that’s why he shuns away from reading success stories of people who have left our country. Also, he thinks directors would have it much easier if they were notified about festivals and how to apply. Unfortunately, he is not working on a new film at the moment, but there is certainly motivation and eagerness to do so.
