About the workshop “Wet collodion ”

The wet board has gained great popularity due to its nature as a biphasic process, negative and positive, enabling it to make a large number of positive copies of a negative one. Later the technology pushed this process of taking photos mostly because of its hypersensitivity to the high light and color.

The three main elements of this technique are glass as a carrier of negatives,  collodion as a medium (organic substance, cellulose dissolved in nitroglycerin solvents) and a light-sensitive substance, i.e. silver nitrate. Briefly described procedure: the glass plate is covered with collodion, then poured into silver nitrate and expands and then develops.

It is important that the glass with the photo-sensitive dye in silver nitrate is expelled within about ten minutes when the layer is still wet and damp. That’s why this technique got the name of a wet collodion.
